My MRI says I have 3 herniated discs. What does that mean?

It is surprisingly common to have multiple herniated discs in the lumbar spine. In studies of people who were not experiencing back pain, many had disc herniations with no symptoms.

The term “herniated disc” is very broad & describes mild bulges to extreme protrusions that cause pain. Herniation is a term used to describe changes to a disc. However, the “herniation” may be a bulge, protrusion, extrusion or sequestered fragments. Depending on their position & size, they may cause symptoms or they may cause no immediate problem at all!
